Adult Retreat at Lake Doniphan

Website update: The Colonial Hills Website is being updated this weekend and may not be available Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Church Cleaning: We have had inconsistency in our weekly cleaning of the church.  The pastorate has decided to see if there is sufficient interest in having several families do the cleaning on a volunteer basis.  If enough families volunteer then two different families can be assigned each week.  Each family would help with the cleaning just 3-4 times per year.  We would provide a check off list of things that need to be done each week.  This would help our budget situation and provide another way for families to be a part of the congregation. Please contact Garland of your willingness to serve in this way.

Women's Department: Ladies, we are now planning the 5th annual Colonial Hills Women's Retreat.  It will be held Nov. 12-14 at the Three Trails Camp (Salvation Army, at the corner of 40 Highway and Lee's Summit Rd.) The theme is Food and Faith and Karen Main will lead our classes.  The rooms have 3 single beds and the restrooms are communal (if you would like to see more, check out www.threetrailscamp.org). The price will be around $80, depending on the number attending.  In order to reserve sleeping and meeting areas, we need to know approximately how many people will attend.  If you think you might possibly (or definitely!) go, please let Margy Kenney or Gail Lundeen know by Sept. 12.

Sunday School: Sunday, Sept 12th will be our Celebration and Kick-off for our new Sunday school year. We would love to have ALL children be there to meet their new classmates and teachers. Teachers from last year, and people that taught this summer, please join us so we can say "THANK YOU". Many of last year's teachers are continuing, which is wonderful. All new teachers, if you can meet at the church on Sat., Sept. 11th, we will put up new posters and check out supplies to see what we need to replenish. If you have a child that will be 8 years old sometime during the next year, and who wants to be baptized, please let me (Julie Magel) or Pam King know. Pam is teaching the Prebaptismal class beginning the end of September, and it will not be offered until next fall.

The Community Services League (CSL) provides 12 basic items to those in need. The last Sunday of each month we will have an offering of one of the items for donation to the CSL families.

This is the fourth part of the building plan

Additional reasons why a new activity center is needed:

1. We do not have adequate classroom space.  We have a pre-baptismal class 2-3 times a year.  The pre-baptismal class meets in the cramped resource room.  When a teacher needs a resource they often times have to interrupt a class in session.
2. There is no dedicated space for the adult class.  The adult class has met in the sanctuary which creates a problem when musicians want to practice before the service or when the Deacons need to test the audio visuals that will be used during the worship service.  At other times the adult class has met in the overflow room.  Because the over flow partition is not sound proof the class is interrupted when musicians practice for the service.
3. Young adults have wanted to have a separate class, but there is no space for the class.  At one time they met in a 8’x8’ storage area.  The meeting space was so inadequate that the class eventually dissolved.
4. It is difficult to have a wedding when we don’t have a separate room for a reception.  Many of our young adults have had to go to another church or rent a facility because our church was not suitable for a wedding and reception.
5. Some families would prefer to have a funeral at the church and a family dinner afterwards.  We have not been able to provide this type of ministry because of the lack of a fellowship area.
6. The current sanctuary is used for worship and fellowship activities.  Whenever the room is used for potlucks, Easter Brunch, youth activities, Boy Scouts, Eggstravaganza, Breakfast with Santa, Tag Sale, Girls or Boys Club, community quilters guild, community election etc the 250 chairs used for worship have to be removed, stored and the room rearranged. Then the chairs have to be set up again after the activity for the next worship service.  This is particularly problematic when we ask people to lead youth activities and then expect them to spend up to an hour before and after their activity moving and setting up chairs.
7. We have a community quilters guild that meets at the church once a month.  They need more adequate storage space than what we are presently able to provide.

In summary the new activity room will be dedicated to the following:
1. Provide more adequate space for our boys and girls clubs and other youth activities
2. Provide more appropriate space to support the Easter Eggstravaganza, Breakfast with Santa and Tag Sale youth activities
3. Provide more adequate space for a boy scout troop
4. Provide more opportunities for community ministries that have been discussed
5. Provide space to respond to opportunities posed by the new Section H housing complex
6. Provide more adequate space for a young adult class
7. Provide more adequate space for an adult class
8. Provide a better facility to support our young adults wanting to be married in their church
9. Provide a better facility to support families having funerals
10. Provide more adequate space for the quilters guild and other community groups that may want to use the facility in the future
